The eternal arguments that annually dominate the discussion of FIFA games are tired and drawn out. There are two sides of the arcade: people who don't play FIFA and plan to denounce it as some form of anti-game, and thus people who break it but complain that it never changes. The latter follows a naive habit aside about how EA should just name the generic game "FIFA" and update it annually. Well, we get it. EA makes only small changes to a trusted formula - a method many franchises have been using over the past decade. Perhaps it's the actual distance from the action, or the repetitive gameplay that hasn't changed over a period of time, that creates this futile argument. But once again the arguments resurfaced as FIFA 20 steadily approached store shelves with all the inevitability of the rising sun.
With this year's iteration of the stalwart series, EA seems to have some bold steps in the right direction, especially when it comes to giving players what they might represent in terms of game modes and statistical tampering. However, is this merely appeasement while larger systems remain frustrating, or does it indicate a real commitment to improving the great game with fans hanging on?

In 3v3, with confined walls up, Volta heads to FIFA for its most exciting social element. Hearing the bass and watching the gloomy festivities, it perfectly complements the sweaty, word-filled couch experience we all want FIFA to entice into. Adrenaline is usually felt in the air as you put together a skillful wing run and use the cage to bounce the ball into a gravity-defying, friendship-busting ball.

The story mode is...really not worth mentioning. It doesn't have the beating heart of The Journey, but the contrast of locations, luster, and neon structure to it. You'll skip the bouncing and smarter (quite rightly) long-running knockout tournaments, but the part that's worth paying attention to is that this is the game itself.
Volta is all about the art of appearing, skill and making a fool of your opponent. Matches are completed by accumulating a number of goals, this may be done by a period or an era if you match a capable player. This marks the prime time that men and women can play FIFA as well, which can be a joy to welcome.
Skill moves are naturally very important here, and it's all about creating fluidity among your teammates by utilizing your environment, ensuring that they need to locate a suitable location near the chest so they can hit targets and embarrass the opposition. It's fun if you're not a stickler for principles, and it looks like a modern version of FIFA Street, which is kind of a bold commendation.
Along the same lines, Volta is concerned about the fact that it's not exactly FIFA Street. The option to own walls doesn't feel fun and limit the fun, as does increasing the team size to 5v5. When Volta starts to look just like the polished "football proper" found elsewhere in FIFA 20, you start making sure of the sharp edges.
The focus on fun and fan blogging originates elsewhere within the FIFA 20 package, most notably in the new rules-based game modes that have made their way into Ultimate Team. They hit and miss in terms of successful dribbles, as the ball-carrying King of Capitol Hill hits the frustrated hole but no superhero rules of matches and survival matches (where a random player is taken off the scoreboard after scoring a goal) deliver a number of refreshing head-to-head matches.
